*swipes at the overhanging cobwebs* Well, this place has been a little quiet lately, hasn't it? Some of us have vanished, into other passions or other corners of the internet, some of us have retreated into those little writerly rooms of our own, and others can't seem to write at all. The time we have to write in and the ways we write have changed. Some of us are professionals, some of us happy amateurs, some of us keep staggering back and forth between the two conditions. We're no longer just writing, but also out there proof-reading and editing.

That said, I'm missing the creative energy we had bouncing around here three or four years ago. There are good reasons why we're not sharing much writing with each other any more, from professional concerns to the sheer lack of time most of us have for reading and commenting (damn, being a grown up sucks sometimes ~_^). However, there seems to be a glum silence falling over at least my friends' list, and I know I'm far from the only one suffering from an ever-worsening case of writer's block. There's a lot we can do to help each other as a community of writers without sharing huge chunks of epic.

So, this is my idea... )

So, anyone want to play? Thoughts and ideas welcome. In the meantime, have some Tolkien, from 'On Fairy Stories':

The realm of fairy-story is wide and deep and high and filled with many things: all manner of beasts and birds are found there; shoreless seas and stars uncounted; beauty that is an enchantment, and an ever-present peril; both joy and sorrow as sharp as swords. In that realm a man may, perhaps, count himself fortunate to have wandered, but its very richness and strangeness tie the tongue of a traveller who would report them. And while he is there it is dangerous for him to ask too many questions, lest the gates should be shut and the keys be lost.
