Hi all,

There's not much left of the year and I'm sure everyone is busy preparing for celebrations. If you've got a moment, please check in and let us know how you are going (even if you haven't done any writing).

Work was pretty much dead for the three days I was in, because unsurprisingly nobody wants to get any printing done the week before Christmas. I spent most of Wednesday designing a logo for the King's Own, my elite warrior guys, as though they were a modern sports team, so that was fun :D Started making them a website on Friday but got bored after all the websiting I've been doing lately, so we'll see if that goes anywhere, ever.

There's a potential in the new year for full-time employment at one of two graphic design companies, so I'm just forcing myself to realise that sweet bugger-all will happen for the next two weeks and this is a totally legit excuse to not go job hunting. It's hard .-.

Nothing in particular. I have a friend coming from Sydney so we're catching up as often as we can while she's also seeing family and other friends. Usually I pretty much just wing it, tho :D What about you?

Hello! Checking in a few days late...On Sunday, I was busy knitting, shovelling snow and cleaning my bracelet (I love silver, but it is a bit high maintenance) so I kind of forgot. I'm indeed busy with preparations for Xmas. I'm done with the shopping, but had hoped to have two knitted gifts. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to make it to the yarn store last Thursday as planned, and went Friday (in a snow storm) instead, so I started a bit too late to finish. I have one done (legwarmers for my mum) and the other one (scarf for my dad) just started. Still, it will probably be a quiet holiday, so I'm not too stressed.

My proseline, as I'm calling it, is doing a really good job so far of making the plot holes glaringly obvious, rather than quietly shoving them under the rug in the outline and saying I'll figure that out when I come to it. I've managed to plug the two biggest ones. It's so much easier to shoehorn things into three pages worth of summing up than it is to tell people "right, pretend I did this thing about ten chapters ago and we'll all be dandy." Still another two holes to figure out but they're easier, I hope. Once I've got them sorted I can get the actual chapter-by-chapter outline done and START WRITING YAAAAY. I've missed my people so much.

I didn't write anything last week (work work work) but Sunday/Monday I gave some more thought to next year's challenge prompts and got some vague niggles for 'sky'. Or possibly 'mountain', but probably 'sky'. Anyway, after what happened to my 'ocean' idea (still cannot reconnect with it after all the ideas got chased away by a family medical emergency), I wasn't risking this one and today (Monday) I wrote about 2000 words of assorted weirdness before any ideas could wander away. I hope it's not considered cheating! Anyway, the stress of last week, too many rum balls and mimosas are probably having an adverse effect on my writing. I seem to be having lots of confused ideas about sky burials gone awry, angry ghosts and vulture-red-tailed-hawk-people. Pass the eggnog.

I've just finished installing Office 2013, because I'm a designer and I like aesthetically pleasing things even if the functionality has barely changed. As such, the functionality has barely changed between 2007 and 2013. You can scribble on it now, which is fun, but potentially useless if you don't have a tablet. Lot of new effects on text, like glowing and outlining and Also the damn thing still doesn't have CMYK. Seriously, Microsoft.

Aesthetically... not sure if want. It's very clean and sleek, which I love lots and lots. Nothing but your actual A4 page has a border. Superfluous bits of interface disappear when they're not needed, like scrollbars and the tab ribbon thingo, keeping it all very sleek.

Downside, though, is that the entire thing is white. Or pale grey, or 'dark grey' which is still I'd guess maybe 30% black at best. If you're in full screen, it really is very bright. Given that I write by shrinking the window down to the width of the page and the height of maybe a dozen lines of text, so the desktop is behind it looking pretty, it's all pretty gorgeous. If you prefer to write in full-screen, though, I can see it getting a bit eye-hurty pretty quickly.
