Happy New Year!

Welcome to 2014, everyone, and to the first check in for the year. I hope you'll stop in and let us know how the new year has been treating you so far, regardless of whether or not you have managed any writing yet (I haven't!)

A few things of note:

Round 1 of the 2014 Talechasing short story challenge and critiquing circle is now open. The deadline is April 1 and the totally optional theme is 'Ocean'. If you plan to participate, please make sure you check out A Critical Discussion of Criticism (if you haven't already).

If there are concrete goals you want to be kept accountable for (not 'oh, I was thinking of trying this'), please let me know in no uncertain terms. I'll be dusting off my whip.

May the 2014 bring you inspiration, discipline, wordage and many good books :D

Whoo! Glad you had a relatively low-key week, and didn't have to miss your trip to the national park in the end.

This is one of the things I hate the most about exercise - a measly two-week break can undo the fitness level that took you four months to achieve. Argh. Hope you won't have too much trouble getting back into the swimming. :)

Have fun! And may 2014 bring you much inspiration and good books, too!

Oh, small fireworks are illegal in Canberra now? I thought the ACT was Australia's last bastion of legality.

Given the prevalence of casual alcohol abuse in our society, I'm fully supportive of the removal of fireworks from drunken dipshits' casual disposal ... but I find myself angry and sad at the thought that the idiot minority have ruined the enjoyment of the majority. Much as they will soon ruin pub/restaurant opening hours for the rest of us.

I feel your pain with the swimming. Tomorrow I will go for my first proper run in a month, and I'm already dreading how much I'm going to suffer. You were going quite regularly up until Christmas, as I recall - your discipline is impressive.

Enjoy the family time and the movies!

I remember for New Year 2000 we went over to Victoria as the only SA family in a group of about 20 Victorian families, staying somewhere on the Mornington Peninsula. At the time, fireworks were still legal to buy here but not in Victoria, so all the families donated about $100 to the Fireworks Fund and we drove across the border with about two grand of explosives in the back of the car.

About five minutes before midnight we queried whether we should let them off. They're not really the kinds of things you can hide from the authorities, y'know? No matter how far you are from the nearest town. Then, bang on midnight, no less than six displays started going off around the hills, so that settled it. It was awesome :D

I too have suffered from doing nothing (and eating everything) all Christmas long. Maybe I will follow your good example and get some exercise...sometime...maybe.

Happy New Year! My week has flown by, which is funny because this week is more low-key than last (which had all the last minute Xmas stuff). I'm due back at work on Monday. Agh!

A lot of plans to meet friends fell through at the last minute due to scheduling issues, but I had a lovely time with friends over tea on Monday, and a wonderful surprise phone call from another friend on New Year's day. After all the good food, I'm ashamed to say my pants fit a little tighter. XD I hope I can get some walking in next week.

People who don't expand over Christmas just aren't trying hard enough XD

Glad you had such a lovely holiday break, even if work is so unreasonably expecting you back on Monday.

This week's holiday business reached fever-pitch at the office - rostering woes have meant that I've been filling in for three different people at the same time over the last fortnight. I also managed to come down with a snotty cold, a headache and a sore throat on New Year's Day, which was all the more disappointing for not having obtained it by traditional means (I was in bed around 8 on NYE). The headache and sore throat have gone, but the cold has transformed into a hearty and productive cough.

Luckily I now have two extremely well-deserved weeks of annual leave. I'm looking forward to at least catching up on some sleep, though I will likely be very busy preparing my unit for minor renovation/moving in from next week onward. It may well be that I'll need a holiday after my holiday!

Regrettably I'll be returning to WAPOL's least favourite assignation (the Australia Day 'festivities'), but to be fair, I escaped them last year ... if only by making sure my holiday safely overlapped it. XD Still, that is a task for another day. For now, I have a couple days to chill out and kill my cold before making war on all the weeds in my new front yard!

How why what when? Where did my week go?!

No, I am not kidding. I woke up thinking it was Wednesday or Thursday, saw the newspaper and did a double-take. How is it Saturday already? Unless it's Sunday by now. HOW?!

My week has been... Well, my week has been such that I have absolutely no clue what happened in it. I read books, though. I am officially up three books for the year and about a quarter of the way through a fourth.

I'm beginning to think I may not have packed my January goals too ambitiously after all... (One scene, two chapters and, now, three books left to read, two of which are relatively short and shouldn't take more than about six hours total if I'm having trouble settling into the read.)

I spent today reading too. Wasn't intentional, but I wanted to finish up what I realised part way through was the first of two chunksters this year. Now I just have one book on the go. I like that much better. ^_^ (I'll probably pick up others anyway because it'll give my hand a needed break, but I'm a one-book-at-a-time girl.)

It is minus 32 degrees celsius right now. Somehow we have not yet declared it too cold to live, and I must go to a clinical session today. This winter has been so strange, as Thursday is supposed to be all the way up to 0 degrees. It wouldn't be the first 30 degree temperature swing this winter.

Classes have all started up again, and I am slowly trying to fix my sleep schedule. With this weather, I propose hibernation for all.

I got a bit of writing down this week, mostly due to my 300-a-day January goal. I wrote down what I remembered of the 'Ocean' challenge before all the ideas got chased away. There are a lot of things I don't know enough about, so today I went to the library and took out a whole bunch of books (tsunamis, sky burials in Tibet, and a book about fauna/flora that live near water) in the hopes they will help me out/give me some ideas to prod the story along.

I poked at NaNo2013, playing around again with the idea of removing the gods altogether. I find myself wondering idle things, like: if you were immortal, with unlimited time on your hands and no muscles or heart to tire out, would you object to doing your laundry by hand? Or would you still build/buy a washing machine? What about walking to another country? Would the walking bore you so much you would sit down and invent a plane instead? A time machine? And a million other silly things. :P

I just started on Silent Harmony: Gold which is most exciting :D I got the prologue done and, rather than an unruly or typically silent narrator, he was disturbingly talkative, to the point where I'm dubious as to whether it feels like his voice anymore, but I'm sure I'll pick up better on that on a reread later down the line.

It has, however, rekindled my desire to write the history of that world from his point of view. It's a vague idea that crops up every now and then, likely never to make it to fruition, but it still hovers around.

Work is almost done on the story bible for...

Well I really don't know what for.

I started the story bible because I had a lot of ideas about some characters and their world, and I really didn't want to lose the ideas to the wastes of time.I really don't know if I'm going to write some sort of novel, or a bunch of short stories, or whatever else I could possibly do. I have an idea for an overarching story that would fit into a novel...but I don't know if I'm brave enough for that.

Still reading Feast of Souls, which is becoming a bit of slog...not sure why. In general, I enjoy it, but I find myself feeling there are maybe too many PoVs (which works really well in some books, but in this one the characters feel a bit underdeveloped as a result). I still remain a bit unconvinced with certain plot elements, although I appreciate that in one character's case, magic doesn't solve her problems like she thinks it will :D I'm also somewhat puzzled by the direction of the overall story. Usually, once I start reading, I don't have this many questions because the story simply takes me away and I go along with it. This much thinking is a bit unusual for me. XD

I recently re-watched Monsters University and, as it did the first time around, the ending just really impressed me. I won't spoil it for anyone who hasn't seen but wants to see it, but there are two hard lessons there not just for kids to learn, but even for teenagers and adults to learn. It's a nice change from the bog standard children's movie lessons, or the more recent trend of 'there IS no right answer' situations that a lot of shows and movies are doing.

That's the kind of thing that keeps Pixar fresh and creative. I envy that so much.

I'm poking space ghosts! (Well, not literally.) And editing That Novel Of DOOM.

No. No, that doesn't really work as a designation, does it? *considers* Nope. I'm still drawing blanks. I think I'll just codename it That Novel. Because I can.

So. Space Ghosts and That Novel are my projects to be kept accountable for, though mostly it's the space ghosts as that has the priority. (Theoretically. Practically... I'm still struggling to get it there. >> I WILL finish that story this year! Somehow. *glares at it*)
